The 10th Annual Fiesta, Alabama’s largest celebration of Hispanic culture and heritage, will be held at Linn Park in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, October 13, from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. With the goal of educating the public about the many different Hispanic countries and their cultures, Fiesta’s approach has been to do this through presenting the best of Hispanic art, music, food and dance.
Admission to Fiesta is $5 per person. Children 12 and under are admitted for free. Donations to the scholarship fund at Fiesta are encouraged at the event.
The success of the very first Fiesta in 2003 confirmed that this type of event was something the community not only needed but embraced. Over 7,000 attendees enjoyed the first event and this audience his nearly tripled to over 20,000 patrons in 2008. We hope to exceed this number on this landmark year!
Fiesta gives Alabamians a unique opportunity to experience the best of Latin American countries in their own backyard! Patrons can journey through over 20 represented countries and experience their people, music, art, food and culture. It showcases that Birmingham is a community that encourages multiculturalism, sensitivity and acceptance.
And Fiesta has proven to be an excellent resource for our Hispanic community. Not-for-profit organizations attend Fiesta to educate attendees about the benefits and resources they offer. Businesses will also be on hand to enlighten attendees about their many goods, services and employment opportunities. The Health & Wellness Village will work to assess the community’s medical needs and provide educational materials and professional assistance.
Fiesta is family-friendly fun for the entire family. While the largest crowd can be found in front of the main music stage, Fiesta offers a wide assortment of activities, from storytelling to wrestling exhibitions. Music, dance, performing arts, visual arts, children’s activities, soccer, cultural education, authentic Latin food as well as community and health-related resources are all part of the event.
Fiesta, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not-for profit organization created to organize and manage a yearly festival that celebrates and educates the public about the diverse Hispanic cultures within the Latino community in Alabama. In 2002, the Hispanic Business Council of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, now the Birmingham Business Alliance, provided leadership for the creation of Fiesta, whose volunteer board of directors produces the yearly event with the help of its members and interested community leaders and volunteers. The Fiesta Board is currently made up of Hispanic and Non-Hispanic professionals from across the metro Birmingham area including Teresa Zúñiga Odom, Mike Suco, Phil Sandoval, Freddy Rubio, Luis Fernandez, Matt Ennis and Chris Miller.
